author stuart lewis posted on 1st june 2018 categories sypc 2018 leave a comment on 14th may 2018 – “my journey so far” – by heidi stewart 30th april 2018 – ‘it takes two’ – by elizabeth restall and joanne searle a wonderful evening from 2 stunning photographers. elizabeth restall (arps) and joanne searle (arps, awpf) left members applauding in delight at a dazzling display of amazing prints and enchanting dialog. joanne searle opened the proceedings by explaining that she enjoys dark, grungy atmospheric images, and that she felt that her monochrome prints were even better when framed using black mounts. it soon became clear that joanne is a photographer who knows what she likes and someone who is not influenced by the views of judges. what followed was an incredible presentation of monochrome prints that took us on a journey around great britain and other wonderful parts of the world. the images clearly show that joanne stays true to her unique point of view. how to sum up the first part of the evening? well, one of her images ‘trapped’ has won 10 awards! joanne enjoys all aspects of photography but always tries to find that something different. over the years she has entered many local, national and international exhibitions with much success. however, she never fails to be delighted with any success, however small, as it means that someone has enjoyed her photography. during the coffee break joanne displayed her panel of 12 prints that gained her the (awpf) distinction – quite stunning. elizabeth restall, from tyndale photography club , stepped up to the front after the break, opening the session with a set of images that included the wonderful image – ‘tree with attitude’. elizabeth uses the image editing plugin ‘fractalius’ to great effect. many of her images have been captured during her participation in workshops organised and led by andy beale. we were treated to a wide range of inspiring images that left members gasping at the detail and creativity showcased during this segment of the evening. many of the images featured locations in places as far away as india. elizabeth has been a camera club member for over 30 years. she was delighted to gain her arps in 2012. this was an excellent evening; a presentation of many many prints, just carrying all those boxes was a challenge ! however sypc thoroughly enjoyed all the prints displayed – thank you. author stuart lewis posted on 9th may 2018 categories sypc 2018 leave a comment on 30th april 2018 – ‘it takes two’ – by elizabeth restall and joanne searle 23rd. april – nature images from my travels – by ralph snook monday night sypc had the pleasure of the company of another first class speaker. ralph snook (arps efiap/b dpagb), walked us through a fantastic set of digital nature images, taken on his recent travels to bulgaria, alaska, bulgaria, costa rica, peru and kenya ralphs relaxed, informative and humorous style was an excellent foil to his nature images all set in their natural habitat. from alaska we saw really close pictures of brown bears, fishing for salmon. these bears were completely ignoring the photographer just a few metres away – quite awesome. by no means a complete set but we were treated to numerous birds, whales, lizards, insects, big cats from kenya, the odd wolf, some sea otters, eagles and not forgetting landscapes. this was an enthralling evening of outstanding digital images taken up close and almost personal of animals most of us only see in books, magazines or a zoo. a fantastic professionally presented evening, please come again ralph. author stuart lewis posted on 27th april 2018 categories sypc 2018 leave a comment on 23rd. april – nature images from my travels – by ralph snook 16th. april – opening of sypc annual print exhibition – at yate library an annual event in the sypc calendar is our exhibition of photographic prints produced by our membership. this year and for the third time, we returned to yate library for our exhibition. our members selected, mounted and framed 42 prints. these high quality prints can be viewed by the general public, free of charge for the next 4 weeks. the exhibition will remain in the library until the morning of may 12th. on monday evening our members convened at the library for the official opening of the exhibition and of course the usual buffet laid on by our own pat and tony jefferies. this year we decided to invite the staff of yate library to select their favorite 3 prints. the winning print, will form the basis of the cover on our 2019 annual handbook. additionally the winner will have their prints displayed in ‘pride of place’ at our next annual exhibition in the spring of 2019. please come along and view the prints and leave any comments in the visitor’s handbook, the book will be in a prominent position. the exhibition will remain on display for 4 weeks until may 12th. author stuart lewis posted on 21st april 2018 21st april 2018 categories sypc 2018 leave a comment on 16th. april – opening of sypc annual print exhibition – at yate library 2018 – round 2 bi-monthly results april 9th. throughout the year sypc have a schedule of 6 bi-monthly competitions where members can optionally submit 2 prints and/or 2 digital images. all the bi-monthly competitions provide an excellent opportunity for members to hear an experienced judge and photographer assess their prowess, both technically and artistically peter weaver (apagb, cpagb and lrps) – was our round 2 external judge for the 2nd. of our 6 bi-monthly 2018 competitions. peter has been a great friend to sypc. over many years peter has visited us either as a judge or presenter of his own work . he is always welcome and clearly an excellent photographer. peter opened the meeting by explaining to the membership his recent exploits and places visited for his own photography. his relaxed and often humorous manner was pleasant but at the same time it was obvious that peter had put a lot of work into reviewing and preparing for the evening. the result was an excellent and constructive narrative describing each image and always offering constructive feedback for improvement. peter critiqued and commented on 82 images (32 prints and 50 digital images). thank you peter – hopefully we will see you again very soon. below is a table of the top 8 images and their authors for each section. round 2 digital images author place unconventional cathy fordham 1st. kirkjufell falls carole brown 2nd. wait for me! creative photograph wales is based at nigel’s home in talybont on usk, which is a village in the heart of the brecon beacons in mid-wales. it is here that he runs his workshops and creates and manages his on-line training programme. although nigel’s photography comes mainly from wales, a cross section of other areas in the uk and the rest of the world, where and how they were taken is secondary to the visual results of his work. nigel’s speciality is clearly his amazing ability to take pictures of familiar places and people in imaginative ways, using natural light and the power of a camera to best effect. we were treated to an evening of these inspiring images from wales and beyond. nigel advised us that the key to his amazing images and what makes them unique, is a technique he described as ‘looking for an individual approach’ and that it is not always the location that is important if we can find interesting shapes and form in a subject and that the output of a photo shoot should be the result of a visual exploration. we learnt that the first question that we should ask ourselves is ‘why am i taking this picture? the answer to that question should guide the final composition. we aren’t just taking a picture. we are creating an image. the answer to nigel’s question -what’s the key to effective composition? simplicity and impact! nigel reminded us of the importance of curves in a landscape image. curves can take us from the beginning to the end of an image. nigel offers a huge range of training opportunities for one-on-one tuition, up to group workshops in wales and beyond. he is a master photographer with the photographer academy. he also holds a trip adviser certificate of excellence. you can view the full range and opportunities offered by nigel and also purchase copies of his images by visiting his website. http://www.creativephotographywales.com/ author stuart lewis posted on 5th april 2018 categories sypc 2018 leave a comment on 26th march 2018 – nigel forster – ‘a passion for landscapes’ 19th march 2018 – jenny hibbert – tales of the river bank jenny hibbert (mpagb) treated sypc to a most stunning and outstanding set of nature images on monday evening. as the title suggests these images were captured in and around various waterways, most of them on a small river close to her own home near bridgend. it just showed us what can be achieved with patience, preparation and clearly skill. how many of us would be prepared to sit on a rock in running water long enough to become part of the scenery in order to get that ‘special shot’ – jenny does !
